Welcome to Funfit

An overweight child is at risk from Type II Diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Funfit is a group fitness class for children 6 years and up. We provide a safe yet challenging environment where your child will feel confident.

Although Funfit is for all children wanting to improve fitness and introduce physical activity into their lives – it is also very much there to help those who need to control their weight.

Below is some information and statistics for those for whom weight is an issue.

If your child is putting on extra weight – don’t ignore it – it is easier to solve the issue before it gets out of control.

Sue is passionate about having an input into prevention of the rising incidence of overweight children. The fight against this problem has to be a combination of exercise and nutrition. We understand that children do not like to be singled out which is why Funfit is about children who want to get fit and stay fit, so there is nothing holding them back from following their dreams and aspirations.

We have all heard about the implications of a sedentary life and all the negative effects of being overweight, self esteem and health are the most talked about.

Funfit is a group fitness class aimed at children 5 years and up who don’t like to be active or those who are active but are beginning to show signs of carrying too much weight. Helping children into a more active life and reducing body fat, needs to be a joint effort between Kids Exercise, your child and you, the parent. Our emphasis is on fun, improvement in fitness and the reduction in body fat. We will teach your children how to be active and show them how to enjoy it. The program is fun with lots of appropriate music, and lots of cardio based games and strengthening activities.

A lot of the time, children are told about healthy choices, but without being given detail about why to choose these healthy choices. Getting children to self- regulate themselves and choose healthy options on their own can be an uphill struggle. However, with explanation and support from us and you the parents, your children can be taught to choose the healthy choices themselves.

It is important to bear in mind that genes only dictate the range of our weight - exercise and healthy eating can control at which end of the range a child will fall.

An interesting fact:

White fat cells are created during three critical periods in life – during fetal development, again at about 4-5 and again during adolescence (Dietz 1977). Once a fat cell is present it is a part of the body until it dies and is preplaced by another cell. Fat cells can increase in size and number, but once they’re part of the body they stay and are waiting to be fed. The only way to remove unwanted fat cells is to either decrease eating/increase exercise and wait for them to die or to remove them through liposuction which is not a recommended choice for children. This is why it is so critical that children lead healthy active lives during the early years.
